Celebrating Differences

Children learn by example. They hear what you say when you're conversing with others and they observe your actions, as well. It's imperative for family members and teachers to act as role models by treating others the way they want and deserve to be treated. Never speak in derogatory terms. Teach your children/students this invaluable lesson: We all have differences and similarities. We all need to respect and embrace both in others.
There's a great activity on page 33 of the Don't Be That KID! At School Resource Guide that can assist in teaching kids about finding common ground with others. Although written on a grade 2-3 level, this activity can be easily adjusted to meet any age group. Your children/students will enjoy interviewing others and completing their own personal Venn diagrams. Additional activities, such as sharing findings with a group and/or using writing prompts can also be found in the Guide.
In January we honor Martin Luther King, Jr. who believed a person's worth should not be measured by their color, culture or class, but rather by his or her commitment to making a better life for all. Dr. King taught us how to live the values of courage, justice, non-violence, forgiveness and community. Let us allow his vision to inspire us and help us teach our children about celebrating differences.
