We've Always Done It That Way

I can remember having my first administrative meeting as a Superintendent of Schools. I wanted to understand their perception of the culture of the school district and asked many questions concerning academic choices and District policies and procedures. Over and over again their responses were "We've always done it that way."
I respect traditions and think they are important to maintain a culture of pride. But there is a difference between true traditions and being stagnant and afraid of change. Change for change sake is never a productive idea. However, establishing strategic planning and determining direction may require some real new initiatives.
I believe that change is essential to grow personally and professionally. There is a comfort level in always doing things the same way; even ordering the same meal in your favorite restaurant! If you are an anxious person, it is difficult to embrace change, whether you are a child or an adult.
There is a saying "There are 3 types of people: Those who make things happen; those who watch what happens; and those who wonder what happened!" Let's challenge ourselves in 2020 to open up new possibilities both personally and professionally. Let's create a mindset that initiates new ideas and some risk-taking. Let's makes 2020 a GREAT year!
