What a Fabulous Year

It was a year ago that the Don't Be That KID! At School Book and Don't Be That KID! At School Resource Guide made their debut! It has been a wonderful journey. So... grab your passport and allow me to take you on the tour of a lifetime.
The journey began with joining Facebook. I reconnected with many old friends and made some new ones through their contacts. The enthusiasm and encouragement they've given me has been so gratifying. Nothing like people you've known for over 50 years!
Next stop, I joined organizations, such as the Martin/Stuart Chamber of Commerce and women's groups like Power Women's Lunch, Premier Women's Network and, most recently, Polka-Dot Powerhouse. I have been incredibly impressed by the earnestness in which these groups support each others' efforts. I'm grateful they have embraced Don't Be That KID! At School and have shared the books with family and friends. And the gals in the women's groups are just amazing! Each luncheon is more rejuvenating than the next!
Along the way, I've had the pleasure of meeting the most dedicated people who are working for organizations on the Treasure Coast. From the Education Foundations of Martin and St. Lucie Counties (who provide grants to teachers and schools to improve educational programs) to organizations, such as Boys and Girls Clubs, Humane Society, Children's Museum, Mary's Shelter, St. Lucie Reading Council, Kane Center and so many more. Each person I have met provides an important, meaningful service to the people in their communities. Working with them, and assisting some with grant applications, has been inspirational. I am so grateful Don't Be That KID! At School has afforded me these opportunities.
There's been lots of family time too! My brother, sister-in-law and husband have joined me at several events, including Cocoa & Cookies with the Authors at Morgade Library, Storybook Forest, St. Lucie Council Family Reading Festival, Kickoff to Kindergarten at the Children's Museum, Boys & Girls Clubs Day for Kids, Palm City Fall Festival and the Chamber of Commerce Holiday Trade Show, to name just a few! We've had a lot of laughs, and best of all, we've had a great time meeting so many wonderful people in Martin and St. Lucie Counties.
I've been fortunate to conduct "Special Story Times" at local libraries. It is absolutely delightful sharing the KID with children. Libraries in Florida and New Jersey have purchased Don't Be That KID! At School for their collections and both public and private schools in many states have bought books and resource guides for their staff to assist them in infusing character education principles into their curriculum. Additionally, Quill & Press at 2721 E. Ocean Blvd. in Stuart, FL is selling both books. I'm so appreciative of their willingness to support me. Stop by and look at their wonderful gifts and cards when you're in the area!
I've learned so much this past year. When I began to write a children's book, I never realized I'd be running a small business! I will be sharing what I've learned along with a presentation on how to develop a comprehensive business plan that includes (1) publishing your work; (2) legal issues; (3) marketing; and (4) finances on February 1, 2018 at Indian River State College's Fielden Institute.
This year has been an exciting adventure and like all good trips, I've collected lots of souvenirs. What are they? The people I've met! The organizations I've encountered! And above all, the opportunities I've had to reach so many parents, grandparents, teachers and children regarding the importance of instilling character building traits each day. After all, that's what Don't Be That KID! At School is all about!
